The Pressing Issue of Nursing Home Abuse and Neglect

Under the Radar: The New York State Elder Abuse Prevalence Study (2011, Lifespan of Greater Rochester, Inc., Weill Cornell Medical Center of Cornell University & New York City Department for the Aging. ) found that for every case known to programs and agencies, 24 were unknown.

According to the National Center on Elder Abuse, the 2010 U.S. Census recorded the greatest number and proportion of people age 65 and older in all of decennial census history: 40.3 million, or 13% of the total population. This “Boomer Generation” effect will continue for decades.

By 2050, people age 65 and older are expected to comprise 20% of the total U.S. population. The fastest growing segment of American’s population consists of those 85 and up. In 2010, there were 5.8 million people aged 85 or older. By 2050, it is projected that there will be 19 million people aged 85 or older.

With the growing shortage of doctors and nurses is projected to increase, it is likely that nursing homes will become increasingly unable to meet adequate standards of care for their residents in the future. This is already starting to show as more and more elderly people choose to live at home. Inventions of new products to the market such as a platform lift mean that nursing homes are no longer a necessity, but a nicety.

What are the signs of abuse and neglect?

As a nursing home resident or a family member or friend of an elderly person, you may see evidence of neglect or suspect that improper care is harming residents. The following may be indications of neglect or abuse:

  • Bedsores (Pressure Ulcers)
  • Reports of physical assault or battery
  • Falls causing injuries
  • Lack of timely medical care
  • Over or under medication
  • Unreasonable physical restraint
  • Unexplained injuries
  • Emotional upset or agitation
  • Unsanitary conditions
  • Failure to assist with personal hygiene
  • Dehydration
  • Malnutrition
  • Failure to control wandering over a long period of time
  • Broken bones such as fractured hip
  • Rapid weight loss or weight gain
  • Unexplained or unforeseen death
